The role of blue-green algae in the pathogenesis of prosthetic valve endocarditis.
Bacterial endocarditis following prosthetic valve replacement is an infrequent complication, although in the last decades, there has been a marked increase in the number of patients receiving this kind of surgery. During the period 1990-1995, 9 cases of prosthetic valve endocarditis were diagnosed at our institution, and a careful analysis of the clinical and surgical data was performed. In only 1 patient a prosthetic valve was found to be the site of infection. In the other cases, infection seemed to originate from vegetations and/or dental infections, with secondary bacteremia. In most cases, staphylococci were isolated in blood cultures. In all the patients the delay in the diagnosis was due to the absence of typical clinical signs and symptoms of endocarditis. A detailed analysis of the surgical treatment is presented, and special attention is paid to the role of blue-green algae in prosthetic valve endocarditis. in 1991, with the first feature titled as all the coins tossed by a single coin which tells the odds of the result as well as the frequency of occurrence. The event was known as Who Tossed the First Coin?, with its tagline being that of a question "Who Tossed the First Coin?"
An important aspect of the event was in the selection of a person at the start of the quiz to launch the first coin. In order to allow a fair start, contestants were given no information about the identity of the person launching the coin. However, if the coin was found on the ground after the quiz, the person would win all the contestants' monetary prizes. This was the only way to qualify for the grand prize of a trip to New York City.
